The Mavericks are looking as dominate as ever as they closed out the Washington Wizards last night. I was at this game, which was the first game of the preseason. The first quarter was close because the Mavs were having way too much trouble shooting their free throws. I think they were 1-20 in the first quarter, (just guessing). Even Dirk Nowitzki was missing from the charity stripe. The Mavs shot 53 percent as a team vs Washington who was shooting 82 percent. They can’t keep that up if they want to be NBA champs.

Antwan Jamison went down in the first quarter with a sprained knee injury. Jamison was actually a former Maverick during the 03-04 season coincidentally. Also, John Hollinger of ESPN wrote during his Player Efficiency Ratings that “His(Jamison) game has held up very well the past few years, he never gets hurt..”. If you don’t believe in jinxing people, it’s time to start. The Wizards had also just given Jamison a 50 million dollar extension on his contract, I’m sure they’d like part of that back now. For the Wizards, having Jamison and Gilbert Arenas out for the game devastated their lineup. Although the Mavericks were likely to win it is good that they didn’t play down to their opponents as they sometimes do. They pulled away in the second quarter and never looked back.

Brandon Bass was surprisingly dominate with 17 points and three rebounds which is higher than his 8.3 points per game average of last year. DeSagana Diop is back in Dallas and contributed 7 rebounds and three blocks. His defense is much appreciated in Big D. Dirk had 17 points as well as 7 boards. Jason Kidd played well with 7 assists and 6 points. Caron Butler of the Wizards had 11 points. A lesser known player Andray Blatche had 18 points and 5 rebounds.

Some of the Mavs younger players are stepping it up to get playing time. Antoine Wright played considerably well racking up 9 points, 3 steals, 4 assists and 2 rebounds. He should see more playing time as well as J.J. Barea who played excellent at guard and did not turn the ball over.

I don’t get why we are paying 10.5 million to Eric Dampier. Is there no one else we can find at the post position? He plays soft defense 9/10 games he plays. He looks like a powerhouse but plays like the Easter Bunny. I would trade him in a heartbeat.

In the fourth quarter the Mavs were up by as much as 36! The Mavs were very quick and all the gears were moving well. Washington might have to start worrying with their two biggest stars out. They may need to trade some draft picks for some decent players.

Wizard’s First Rule is the first Terry Goodkind book in the Sword of Truth series which is also the basis for the ABC television series Legend of the Seeker. This is a review of this remarkable book.

This isn’t your typical epic fantasy book. Yes, it has all of the normal trappings you would expect such as an epic sized quest, plenty of conflict, and of course a dragon or two. This book has all those things but it has significantly more. In Wizard’s First Rule Goodkind shows us more than just an epic adventure story where our hero attempts to save the world from ruin.

 Our hero is named Richard Cipher and we adventure with him on a journey to becoming a seeker.  A seeker’s role is to find the truth in things and a seeker’s sword has the word “Truth” engraved on it. And it is in this journey to find truth that Goodkind takes this story from just a story to a real exploration of truth and the nature of good and evil.  There are many conversations and situations that explore the bipolarity of good versus evil and the grey area that lies between the two. Doesn’t it make sense that even the evilest of men believes that what he is doing is righteous? Yes it does and Goodkind takes a good hard look at this. He raises questions in your mind about the whole nature of truth and the real commitment it takes to find the real truth.  This is an intelligently written book that gives you more than just a story. It gives you lots of food for thought.

Unique Twist on the story

A typical and effective tool that a writer will use is to put our hero on a time limit -as time counts down the tension builds. It is very effective writer’s tool and in this novel Goodkind puts a nice spin on this. He puts the evil bad guy on a timer. Our protagonist (Darken Rahl) has a very specific time limit if he is to achieve his personal goals that will bring ruin down on the world. And our hero, along with a small group of companions can foil it all if they can just hold things off long enough for time to run out. It’s a wonderful reversal of the usual time limit based story.

The Story and Writing

The story and writing are superb. There are some interesting and surprising plot twists and things that happen. In other words you go along for quite a wild and exciting ride. And there are some unique fantasy themes and ideas like the Boxes of Orden and the Book of Counted Shadows which are both central to the story and quite unique.

Avoiding some of the Pitfalls of typical epic fantasy

One of the biggest problems I run across with epic fantasy series is the complexity they often contain. Many series of books have enormously complex worlds with a cast of characters that numbers in the scores if not hundreds. This complexity can get very confusing as various factions, lordships, families, and bloodlines partake in the story. In Wizards First Rule there is none of this. We are introduced to the central characters early in the book and as the story progresses we meet a small number of new characters that are central to the story.  It all flows very smoothly and it all stays on target. You won’t have to take any notes to keep track of all the characters.

Theme and Reading level

This book is not for children or for the faint of heart. There is some graphic violence and an extended torture scene that you will find unsettling. I found it uncomfortable to read and this is exactly the point that Goodkind was trying to make.  If you want to carefully study the ethics and morals of the battle between good and evil you have to fully show both sides of this coin – both the good in all its goodness and the evil in all its dark and unsettling reality. The only real way to defeat evil is to first see it and acknowledge it.

Wizard’s First Rule is an intelligently written and exciting epic fantasy story that goes beyond just a story. It is also an examination of ethics, values, morals, and the perpetual battle between good and evil. It will make you think about the nature of the struggle and the real purpose of the hero.

Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards is a professional basketball team based in Washington, D.C. They are amongst seven teams in the Atlantic Division of the eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The franchise plays in the Verizon Center also known as “The Phone Booth” and wears jerseys of red, white and blue.

The Wizards started its NBA adventure in the 1961-62 season. They were then called Chicago Packers and they managed to win only 18 games in their first season. They changed their name to the Zephyrs in next season. Then in 1963, they became the Baltimore Bullets as the franchise moved to Baltimore, Maryland.  The 1964-65 NBA season saw first success for the team and they reached the playoffs for the first time. In the following season, the Bullets advanced to the Western Conference Finals but lost to Los Angeles Lakers.

The Washington Wizards have won NBA championship in 1978. They defeated the Seattle SuperSonics in 7 games and brought a professional sports championship to Washington D.C. for the first time in 36 years. They were the forerunners of that era as they also won four Conference titles in 1971, 1975, 1978 and 1979 and seven Division titles.

The Washington Wizards saw many modifications in their team, team jerseys and logos in years to come. The biggest of them came on May 15 1997, when the Bullets officially changed their logo and name to Washington Wizards. They entered the 1979 NBA Playoffs and finished the regular season at 54–28. In the playoffs the Bullets nearly blew a 3-1 series lead against the Atlanta Hawks, but managed to hold off the Hawks in 7 games.

This was the time when the Wizards started declining in their game and wins and didn’t advance to the playoffs for several years. They made some very good trades but in vain. A major transition came for the Wizards when in January 2000; Michael Jordan became the Washington Wizards’ president of basketball operations and minority owner. He dissociated himself from the ownership net year in 2001 and returned as player but he soon left the team because of internal some issues. The Wizards, however, didn’t showed improvement in their ratings and continued to miss important games.

A year after making the playoffs for the first time in 8 years, the 1997/98 season saw a new beginning for basketball in Washington. The team changed its name to Wizards fearing Bullets would endorse gun violence. The addition of a new logo and new uniforms and a new arena as the MCI Center in downtown Washington completed this change. MCI Center was opened on December 2nd with the Wizards beating the Seattle Supersonics 95-78.

At the MCI Center, the Wizards were hard to beat as they posted a 24-12 record. However, they would fall 1 game short of the playoffs as they concluded in 4th place with a 42-40 record. During the 2004-2005 season, the team posted their finest regular season record 45-37 in 26 years. It marked the first time the franchise had ever made the playoffs as the Wizards. The Wizs won their first playoff game since 1988 in Game 3 of the first round against the Chicago Bulls.

In Game 5, they took their first lead in a playoff series since 1986 and won against Chicago. In Game 6, they won their first playoff series in 23 years defeating the Chicago Bulls 94-91; also becoming only the ninth team in NBA history to win a playoff series after being down 0-2.

Moses said: O Pharaoh! I am a messenger from Allah to you,

Pharaoh said: You are lying!

Moses said: when talking about to Allah it is compulsory to say the truth. Truly I have come to you with a clear signs from Allah.

Pharaoh Said: If you have come with a sign, then produce it.

Then Moses cast down, he flung down his staff and it was an enormous huge snake manifest for all to see,

And he drew forth his hand, he took it out from his bosom (armpit), and it was white, radiant and shining for the beholders.

The chiefs of Pharaoh’s council said: Lo! this is some knowing wizard who is proficient in wizardry. Surely this man is a cunning sorcerer, outstanding in the art of magic. Allah inspired Moses (saying): Throw your staff!  And he threw it. And lo! it swallowed up their lying show, their staffs and ropes.  Then what?

The Egyptian sorcerers, as well as Pharaoh and his folk, were  defeated, humiliated and ended up abased. Moses was victorious against them.

QARIB: saying: ‘we believe in the lord of the worlds,

SHAKIR: they said: we believe in the lord of the worlds,

PICKTHAL: crying: we believe in the lord of the worlds,

YUSUFALI: saying: “we believe in the lord of the worlds,-

Verse 7:122

QARIB: the lord of moses and aaron. ‘

SHAKIR: the lord of musa and haroun

PICKTHAL: the lord of moses and aaron.

YUSUFALI: “the lord of moses and aaron.”

Verse 7:123

QARIB: pharaoh said: ‘do you believe in him before i permit? this is a plot that you have contrived in the city in order to expel its people from it. now you shall know!

SHAKIR: firon said: do you believe in him before i have given you permission? surely this is a plot which you have secretly devised in this city, that you may turn out of it its people, but you shall know:

PICKTHAL: pharaoh said: ye believe in him before i give you leave! lo! this is the plot that ye have plotted in the city that ye may drive its people hence. but ye shall come to know!

YUSUFALI: said pharaoh: “believe ye in him before i give you permission? surely this is a trick which ye have planned in the city to drive out its people: but soon shall ye know (the consequences).

Verse 7:124

QARIB: i will cut off on opposite sides a hand and a foot, and then crucify you all! ‘

SHAKIR: i will certainly cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then will i crucify you all together

PICKTHAL: surely i shall have your hands and feet cut off upon alternate sides. then i shall crucify you every one.

YUSUFALI: “be sure i will cut off your hands and your feet on apposite sides, and i will cause you all to die on the cross.”
